So you’ve probably heard of Invisalign braces, but how much do you know about the process? So much more goes into Invisalign treatment than just putting on a clear mouthpiece. One of the obvious reasons why someone would want to get Invisalign, is that they are far less noticeable than traditional metal braces. This means a lot to teenagers who don’t want to have metal braces in high school, and offers a solution for adults who never had treatment and want to get their teeth straight later in life. You probably have a bunch of questions, which we can answer simply just by giving us a call, but we wanted to go over a few brief Frequently Asked Questions to help you better understand the process.
Does It Hurt?
Like any orthodontic treatment, you’re going to experience some discomfort. In comparison to traditional metal braces, many of our patients say Invisalign is significantly less uncomfortable. Most patients experience some slight discomfort the first day, but Tylenol typically relieves any of that. Because the aligners are made of plastic, irritation to the gums and cheeks are limited significantly compared to metal brackets and wires.
How Does Invisalign Work?
Made from clear, medical-grade plastic, the patient wears aligners in a progressive timeline. The series starts with the initial aligner, followed by a succession of aligners that slowly shift the teeth. This allows the bite to close any gaps, create space, and form into an ideal alignment. Depending on the patient, each treatment goes through about 18-30 aligners on average to achieve the ideal bite.
What is Invisalign Teen?
Other than the obvious market-target in the name, Invisalign Teen is designed with the teenage brain in mind. Addressing the needs of teens, Invisalign Teen features blue compliance indicators that fade over the time of treatment. Invisalign doesn’t work if you don’t wear your aligners, so the blue indicators allow the patient, parent, and orthodontist to monitor the process. This helps keep the patient accountable, and wear their aligners. The aligners are also engineered to keep the natural eruption of growing teeth in mind for patients between 13-19. Plus, often times a few free extra aligners are offered in case one is damaged or lost.
Why Should I Get Invisalign?
If you are looking to improve your smile, Invisalign can offer the most comfortable, and least invasive treatment. Not only do they not show as much, but they hurt less, and allow you to take them out if you need to. On top of all that, your orthodontic visits will be much quicker. With traditional metal braces, a trip to the orthodontist can mean tightening, wire changes, appliance applications, etc. When you have Invisalign, all we need to do is monitor movement and progress, and give you a next set of aligners!
